Learning About Water Access Through a Service-Learning Fundraising Project (PDF, 3 MB)
A KnowH20 Middle School Lesson Plan
These middle school lesson plans focus on developing a community fundraiser in the form of a "green" garage sale. The target for the fundraising is PlayPumps, a water pumping system that relies on kid power — children playing on a merry-go-round — to pump water up from the water table. Hundreds of these systems have been built in Sub-Saharan Africa, and the goal to erect hundreds more continues. The issue is of particular relevance to children, since African girls are often responsible for hauling a family's water supply, making it impossible for them to attend school. In this three- to five-week middle school curriculum, students learn/reinforce a broad range of math, science, and literacy skills. A series of interactive activities help students grasp the impact of water shortage through small group map-reading activities that also include challenge options. Assessment strategies range from documentation folders to student- and teacher-generated rubrics. (Curriculum developed by NYLC and PlayPumps International.)

Learning About Water Access While Strengthening Citizenship Skills (PDF, 2 MB)
A KnowH20 High School Lesson Plan
These high school lesson plans are rooted in civic engagement and start with lessons that activate prior knowledge about water issues and Africa. It then expands to interactive lessons, including assessing personal water usage and charting the impact of water access on communities. In addition to exploring aspects of water access internationally, students also learn leadership skills for taking action — whether raising awareness about local water issues or fundraising. These lessons are linked to PlayPumps, a water-pumping system that relies on kid power — children playing on a merry-go-round — to pump water up from the water table. While hundred of these systems are in place throughout Sub-Saharan Africa, students can become part of an international effort to meet still unmet demands. Learning About Water Access While Strengthening Literacy Skills (PDF, 2 MB)
A KnowH20 Elementary School Lesson Plan
These elementary lesson plans focus on writing, illustrating, and publishing a children's book as a class while learning about water access issues in Sub-Saharan Africa. Students begin by developing a community survey to assess awareness of water issues locally. Assuming that the outcome is a fairly minimal understanding of water access, these lesson plans take teachers through a book-development process, culminating in a celebration and book-release party to raise community awareness. The book-development lessons use standard writing process approaches, and teach (or reinforce) story-boarding, drafting, editing, and rewriting skills using a student-friendly rubrics. The process for planning the culminating community celebration is also outlined in the lesson plans. The process can span 4-8 weeks. (Curriculum developed by NYLC and PlayPumps International.)
