Lake Awareness

State:
Wisconsin
United States

A local lake management organization asked high school students to help curb vandalism at a nearby lake and park. As part of the Lake Awareness project, the students met with lake-district members, town and county representatives, the police, and park and forest officials. The student leaders organized a convention; invited guests, including 7th- and 8th-grade students; and introduced and informed speakers. They also conducted research on the subject and reported the results in the school newsletter and at the state lakes convention, and produced a brochure on curbing vandalism. The response to their work was so strong that they were asked to generate information for other organizations and even received an award.
