Teens Against Teen Pregnancy

Eighth-grade students in a language arts class chose relevant community issues, and created public service announcements to raise peer and public awareness. A group of six students focusing on teen pregnancy became immersed in the project and wrote, designed, and later participated in the production of a public service campaign for television and print.

A Child-Friendly Emergency Room

After the pediatric wing in the local hospital closed, a class of kindergartners made the existing emergency room more child friendly. They changed the appearance of the emergency room to ease the anxieties many of them were experiencing, and wrote a book explaining emergency room procedures to children and their parents.

Pizza Party for Safety

One of the most important lessons a student can learn is how to stay safe. It's a skill he or she will use throughout life. Teachers of one special-needs class addressed safety with their students through academics, individual goals, and collective celebration.

Senior Safety

When they reached 6th grade, students felt they had learned a lot about how to stay safe playing outside and being home alone. They wanted to use their knowledge to help others stay safe, so they created a safety pamphlet for their school's elderly neighbors.

Safety on the Bus

Third graders decided they'd had enough of bullies on the bus. Enlisting the help of 5th graders, they worked with other students, school administrators, and bus company personnel to better understand the problem and implement solutions. As a result of the students' efforts, the number of bullying incidents was cut in half.

Cooking Club

Special-needs students chose nondisabled peer buddies to assist them in mastering the skills necessary to shop for groceries and prepare a nutritious meal. The special-education students began by practicing their ability to read labels and recipes, along with the math skills to make change for food purchases. As a group, they chose an ethnic theme, searched for appropriate recipes, and planned and prepared the meal for a multicultural celebration.

Senior-Senior Prom

A 12th-grade sociology class studying issues related to the elderly sought greater understanding of the problems facing this population by visiting adult day care centers, senior citizen centers, and nursing homes. During weekly visits, they witnessed firsthand the concerns of senior citizens in today's society. In celebration of their newfound friendships, the students and senior citizens co-planned a Senior-Senior Prom.

The Fight Against Buckthorn

Facing a growing threat of buckthorn- a tall non-native shrub that spreads aggressively, forcing out local flora, including tree saplings - students did an issue analysis, community education program, and cleanup projects.

Preventing West Nile

Seventh and eighth graders decided to take action and try to stop the spread of the West Nile Virus in their community. They began by conducting Internet research and reviewing information from the Department of Health and the state's River Basin Commission, and launching a community-awareness campaign.

Testing the Waters

A high school biology class decided to test the water in their local lake and found it was polluted. After researching water pollution and ways to reverse it, the students developed a five-year plan to clean up the lake. They worked with the town council to implement pollution reduction plans and developed a presentation to train residents to test water quality.

Hello, You're on the Air!

In response to negative impressions of teenagers among local residents, high school students launched their own radio talk show to address teen issues in a positive way.

Walking for Peace

Students spend a lot of time at school, in class and in extracurricular activities, so their school neighborhood is a second home to them. Fifth graders demonstrated their ability to be good neighbors by organizing a march for peace in their community.

Giving Safety Wings

The topic of home alone safety is one of particular interest to many students. One 2nd-grade class decided to emphasize its importance by creating safety kites to sail high above a city-wide press conference on the topic.

High school students living with HIV and AIDS collaborated with uninfected peers to teach younger students about the disease.

Theater is an excellent medium for young people fighting the AIDS pandemic. A group of students used theater to teach other youths how to deal with peer pressure and make positive decisions regarding their health.

After reading an article about babies born with AIDS, students decided to make baby blankets to publicize that AIDS affects everyone, even the youngest of children.
