Curriculum and Videos
NYLC's Y-RISE: The Service-Learning and HIV/AIDS Initiative is an HIV/AIDS prevention model that gets young people educating their peers. This curriculum package includes a manual and two videos. The manual covers the basics of service-learning, peer education, and HIV/AIDS — and allows for the incorporation of an outside HIV experts. Teachers and community-based organization staff alike will find it useful in integrating HIV/AIDS prevention into an existing curriculum (such as health or social studies) or in developing an after-school club. A short video serves as an introduction to the Y-RISE approach. A second video, Sleep with a Virgin: A Perspective on AIDS takes a theater-based approach that complements the manual. It contains a series of vignettes, many of which are youth acted, illustrating settings in which HIV/AIDS myths and information might be shared. Interactive games and discussion questions are used to explore and process the content in the video.

A Service-Learning Project Example
Fourth grade students, fascinated by their town's architectural diversity, decided to research historic sites and create a brochure to educate their neighbors and out-of-town visitors. Through the process, they learned how the buildings reflected the cultural, economic, and political aspects the lives of early 19th-century farmers, plantation owners, slaves, and townspeople. The brochure is now available to residents and tourists who can use it to take a self-guided walking tour of the town.
