Wendy Spencer to Keynote 24th Annual National Service-Learning Conference

St. Paul, Minn. (March 6, 2013) —The National Youth Leadership Council is pleased to announce that Wendy Spencer, Chief Executive Officer of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), will keynote the 24th Annual National Service-Learning Conference, Without Limits, on Wednesday, March 13, at the Colorado Convention Center.

Spencer has been recognized nationwide for her leadership in the volunteer sector. In 2006, President George W. Bush appointed Wendy to the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. And in 2010, she was elected by her peers to chair the American Association of State Service Commissions, the nonprofit association that advocates for 54 state service commissions promoting national and community service across the United States.

“The Corporation for National and Community Service has long been a supporter of service-learning as a strategy to engage young people in making real change in the world,” said Kelita Bak, NYLC CEO. “We appreciate Wendy’s leadership and are thrilled that she will join us in Denver to deliver her message of how service-learning is helping the Corporation meet community needs across the country.”

The National Service-Learning Conference will convene at the Colorado Convention Center March 13-16. Unlike other professional gatherings, the National Service-Learning Conference features young people who lead many of the workshops, serve as keynote speakers, and host discussions — just as they are leading the call for change across the globe.

Youth and adults alike will explore hundreds of powerful learning experiences during workshops, on- and off-site projects, and keynote addresses. On Wednesday, attendees will hear from Marc Keilberger, co-founder of Free the Children; Thursday, they will be inspired by Reginald Dwayne BettsCouncilmember, Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, Danielle Liebl, Special Olympics athlete and Youth Activation Committee member, Kaitlyn Smith, and Special Olympics Youth Activation Committee member; on Friday, Naomi Tutu, daughter of South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu and associate director of the Office of International Programs at Tennessee State University will speak, along with Jorge Zamora, a student at Chicago Bulls College Prep and Dawn Engle, the Executive Director of the PeaceJam Foundation.
