MEDIA ALERT: High School Students Addressing Teen Driver Safety Invited to U.S. Department of Transportation

WHO and WHAT:
Student representatives from 10 Project Ignition National Leader Schools from across the U.S. have been invited to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) in Washington D.C. to share how they and their classmates are positively impacting teen driver safety in their communities. Project Ignition, coordinated by the National Youth Leadership Council® and funded by State Farm®, is a teen driver safety grant program that connects academic goals to teen driver safety using service-learning.

While at the DOT, the students will:

  • Shadow DOT employees to better understand the national role of the DOT in public safety;
  • Meet leadership from the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA); and
  • Participate in a special reception with Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, their school advisors and key leaders — each informing the other regarding how schools and youth can play a vital role in addressing teen driver safety and other community needs through service-learning.

WHY:
Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens, according to the NHTSA. Young people are responding to this staggering statistic and, through Project Ignition, are engaging their peers and communities in this issue by executing powerful campaigns to change teen driving behavior.
