Project Ignition, a teen driver safety program sponsored by State Farm® and coordinated by the National Youth Leadership Council, celebrated its sixth year at the 21st Annual National Service-Learning Conference in San Jose, Calif. on Friday, March 26. With a rousing award ceremony and celebration afterward, State Farm honored exemplary Project Ignition programs.

From October 14-16, 2007, 140 teen leaders representing all 50 states met in Washington, D.C., for the Teen Driver Safety Summit. Over three days, we addressed issues relating to the number-one killer of teens — car crashes. The event coincided with the congressionally sanctioned National Teen Driver Safety Week.

Carson High School Students participating in State FarmŽ and NYLC's Project Ignition promoted safe driving through service-learning. Their school assemblies, called Every Second Counts, demonstrated that students make better driving choices when they slow down and pay attention. The Nevada Appeal was there to cover the story.

Students and teachers from across the country are gathering in Washington, D.C., for the Teen Driver Safety Summit. Held October 15-16, the event kicks off National Teen Driver Safety Week, and will provide service-learning and public-policy training to prepare young people for advocacy work and peer-education efforts.

State Farm and NYLC’s announced the winners of this year’s Project Ignition service-learning teen-driver-safety contest with an awards ceremony and dance party at The 17th Annual National Service-Learning Conference.

Once again, State Farm and NYLC’s Project Ignition asked schools and organizations across the country to take a closer look at teen driver safety. Teams of students submitted project proposals, and after careful judging and some lively debates, 25 semifinalists were selected to receive $2,000 grants to implement their projects.

On March 18, 2005, NYLC and State FarmŽ held the Licensed to Live Award Festival at The 16th Annual National Service-Learning Conference in Long Beach, Calif. Students from 10 high schools who were finalists in the first year of Project Ignition, a service-learning program promoting teen-driver safety, were recognized. All of the finalists had created media campaigns to educate their peers, with Mooresville (Ind.) High School's In a Flash taking top honors and the accompanying $10,000 grant.

Car crashes are the number-one killer of teens in the U.S., but across the country, high school students are creating media campaigns to change attitudes and save lives. These young people are part of Project Ignition, State Farm® and NYLC’s service-learning initiative to support high school students as they promote safe driving among their peers. On Friday, March 18, in Long Beach, Calif., one of these campaigns will be named “Best in Show,” earning a substantial grant for its school.

NYLC and State Farm® have announced the 25 high schools selected to participate in Project Ignition. Each school will receive $2,000 from State Farm to launch a service-learning project. Their charge: Create a media campaign addressing teen-driver safety.
