AIDS is not an equal-opportunity disease. The likelihood of contracting HIV varies with age, ethnicity, geography, gender, and socioeconomic status. Young people in particular are profoundly affected. In 2001, 2.1 million new infections were reported worldwide among young people, accounting for more than 40 percent of all new infections.
Many people still lack the reliable information and social support necessary to avoid infection. Reaching these people through service-learning can transform young people from potential victims of the disease into powerful proponents of healthy behaviors.
Y-RISE (Youth Replicating Innovative Strategies and Excellence in HIV/AIDS prevention) is NYLC’s multifaceted effort to mobilize young people in the fight against AIDS. Launched in April 2003, it combines research, training, peer education, and the arts in bridging the gap between knowledge and behavior.
