NYLC’s signature service-learning program, WalkAbout, integrates service-learning into summer school and year-round education programs to help young people in middle school and high school address pressing needs in their communities.

WalkAbout taps the power of young people through service-learning as a sustainable, effective force for improving their communities while strengthening academics.

WalkAbout service-learning programs are currently underway in a number of Gulf Coast sites in response to the tremendous long-term needs of people and communities affected by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The initiative connects individuals and organizations — including local state education associations — that are mobilizing young people to stem the impact of natural disasters through service and learning.

In the Gulf Coast region, WalkAbout focuses on the crisis caused by the recent hurricanes, but its goal is not only the recovery of the region, but also the creation of replicable, youth-centered disaster-preparedness and relief models.
