Youth Room Celebrations at the National Service-Learning Conference

The Youth Room at the 2010 National Service-Learning Conference buzzed with workshops, discussions, and activities for youth by youth. As a causal and informal space within an education conference, the Youth Room represented a collaborative effort of youth from across the county with the support of NYLC staff.

The talents and energy of the youth committee ensured the success of the youth room. They helped organized workshops that included, “Building Peace Through Creative Expression,” presented by members of youthrive: LIVE! to engage young people and adults in the development of peace building through music and art. Other workshops included “Discover the Achievement Gap” and “Get You Service-Learning Swag On.”

During the grand opening of the Youth Room, more than 250 youth gathered and enjoyed snacks, board games, Rock Band, DDR, and Comedy Sportz Improv Comedy. Rocking out on “I Love the 80’s Night,” there was a costume contest, a 1980’s YouTube playlist, and a 80’s dance party.

Youth can stay in touch with new friends and other participants from the conference on Facebook through NYLC's page, and learn about next year's conference in Atlanta, Ga.
