Between October 24-28, NYLC President and CEO Jim Kielsmeier and Common
Cents New York Executive Director Teddy Gross will travel throughout
the Gulf Coast region, meeting with young people, educators, State
Education Associations, local Learn and Serve grantees, community-based
organizations, and other residents. The information gathered will
inform the work of Resources for Recovery, an affiliation of regional and national organizations — many within the affected region — convened by NYLC and its National Service-Learning Exchange
to develop a sustainable, effective approach to tap the power of
young people through service-learning as part of the recovery effort.

The schedule includes visits to Jackson, Biloxi, New Orleans, and
Houston, including meetings with the Mississippi Commission for
Volunteer Service; Center for Community and Civic Engagement,
University of Southern Mississippi; DREAM of Hattiesburg; Moore
Community House; and the Louisiana Service Commission. A site visit to
the Lamar-Dixon Red Cross Shelter is also planned.

It is hoped that this assessment will provide a better understanding
of the needs of schools, youths, and communities, informing the
development of Resource to Recovery programming.

Resources for Recovery welcomes input and participation from
interested individuals and organizations. To get involved, please
