The National Youth Leadership Council is thrilled to announce that former President Bill Clinton will address The 17th Annual National Service-Learning Conference. The former president will be speaking at the We the People Gala, on Thursday, March 23, 2006, 7:00 p.m., at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.
"We are honored to have President Clinton join us for this event," says NYLC President and CEO Jim Kielsmeier. "He made comprehensive service — including AmeriCorps, service-learning, and senior service — a centerpiece of his campaign, and once elected, he followed through on that promise. Building on the legislative and funding base of previous administrations, he raised nonmilitary civic service to its highest level since the New Deal."
Clinton joins a distinguished lineup of gala speakers, including service-learning pioneer and former Senator Harris Wofford and former Maryland Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend.
Throughout the conference, attendees also will be treated to keynote speeches by Howard Zinn, renowned author of "A People's History of the United States"; Hafsat Abiola, the 27-year-old human rights activist from Nigeria and founder of the Kudirat Initiative for Democracy; and author, historian, and Holocaust survivor Gerda Weissmann Klein, founder of The Gerda and Kurt Klein Foundation. Sessions also will be held with two-time vice presidential candidate Winona LaDuke, Program Director of Honor the Earth, and Jimmy Biddle, Co-Founder and Education Director of Life-Zone.org and a volunteer training team member at ActionAIDS, Philadelphia's oldest and largest AIDS service organization.
The National Service-Learning Conference is the largest gathering of youths and practitioners involved in the service-learning movement. Held March 22-25, 2006, in Philadelphia, this singular event draws nearly 2,900 educators, state and federal officials, youth leaders, program coordinators, policy-makers, and representatives from community-based organizations.
Online registration has been extended through March 8, Midnight PST. Admission is included in conference registration.
