Our Duty
our duty
From July 17-24, 2005, 88 youths and 13 adult partners gathered in Sandstone, Minn., for NYLC's National Youth Leadership Training,
a life-changing week of adventure, self-discovery, friendship, cultural
exchange, leadership building, and service. At the weeks conclusion,
Evan, a 17-year-old participant from Missouri, left us with his poem, "Our Duty."
The gathering of
Leaders.
Not Leaders in all eyes,
But Leaders in most.
Each one
of them is different,
In size, shape and color.
And if they combine
forces,
It makes something like none other.
I can stand here today,
And say I'm not perfect.
I realize there is much room,
For help and
improvement.
I learned here at NYLT,
That my problems are common.
And that is why we have chosen,
To come together and solve them.
I could have just left camp,
And thrown away all I learned.
But
if I did go and do that,
I'd be giving up on all those burned.
Burned by the flame we lit together,
Those first few days at camp.
The flame we all shared,
And decided to carry on with us.
So
it's now time to finish,
The last part of my mission.
The mission we all
set out to do,
To learn, serve and change the world!
