The Saint Paul Public School's Community Education Citywide Advisory
Council has named NYLC Program Manager and National Service-Learning
Exchange North Central Regional Director Bernard Gill its Community
Programs Partner of the Year. The award will be presented at a June 17,
2004, ceremony, honoring community members and staff who have
contributed to the growth of Community Education programs.

NYLC has been working with the Saint Paul Public Schools in an
ongoing effort to improve learning, strengthen communities, and nurture
youth leadership by integrating service-learning throughout the school
system. The award recognizes Gill's work promoting and helping to
implement service-learning programs, and his leadership as chair of the
Saint Paul Service-Learning Council, the committee that promotes the
school system's service-leaning programming.

"Though we've had pockets of service-learning in the school system,
it's never been thoroughly integrated with all of our curricula," says
Beverly Wittgenstein, Supervisor, Community Education. "Bernard has
done an amazing job of helping us to change that. With his help, we are
incorporating service-learning throughout the entire system, with the
goal of making it a central part of every student's education."
