NYLC Welcomes New Staff
NYLC is pleased to announce the addition of two new staff members, web manager Bill Connell and Project Ignition program assistant Alexa Horwart.
Bill Connell joins NYLC as web manager, overseeing the organization’s internet strategy and website projects, the Generator School Network, and the multimedia professional development tool Lift: Raising the Bar for Service-Learning among them. He is interested in how NYLC has made use of technology to support and promote service-learning, and is looking forward to “finding new ways to help schools, teachers, and students connect to their communities and each other.”
Having children who attend a Montessori school, Bill says he’s familiar with many of the ideals of service-learning through Montessori learning methods. He’s also a big believer in being connected with neighbors and getting students active in their communities: “I want to be part of promoting the sort of hands-on learning and community ties that are so effective in getting students engaged in their larger world,” he says.

Alexa Horwart joins NYLC as a program assistant for Project Ignition, providing general support for the program and engaging with active service-learning communities across the nation. She’s excited about interacting with Project Ignition schools because “These are real students and advisors saving the lives of their peers!” She admires the strides students are making to keep their friends and community safe, and looks forward to sharing their stories with the world.
Alexa was drawn to service-learning as an educator in Indonesia where empowering her students to take ownership of their communities and education was her most rewarding experience. When she returned to the U.S., the opportunity to work with Project Ignition and NYLC seemed like a perfect fit because she would have the opportunity to continue to support and expand youth voice.
