NYLC Welcomes 2012-13 Youth Advisory Council
Fourteen youth ages 14-18 from across the United States have been selected to serve on the National Youth Leadership Council’s Youth Advisory Council. Having gone through NYLC’s National Youth Leadership Training in July, these young people have been selected for their commitment to NYLC’s mission, their understanding of service-learning and the achievement gap, and their passion to improve the world around them.
This year NYLC is unrolling a new model for the advisory council. Members are expected to serve on a committee during their one-year term that aligns with a department within the organization, and a committee chair will serve as a liaison between NYLC staff and the youth committee. “What this new model provides is a stronger connection between our youth advisors and [NYLC] staff,” said Justin VerMeer, Youth Engagement Coordinator at NYLC. “It also gives the youth an opportunity to choose a focus area within the organization to pursue professional exposure and development opportunities while they serve their year with us.“
Additional leadership opportunities are provided to members through the participation and planning of the National Service-Learning Conference and the National Youth Leadership Trainings.
A kick-off retreat will take place on October 12-13 in Minneapolis, Minn. which will train new youth members and introduce them to NYLC staff. Members will have the opportunity to create yearlong committee work plans and also participate in the half-day Twin Cities Youth Council Collaborative Training with other local youth councils, including the MN Alliance with Youth, ISD 622 Youth Leadership Council, Brooklyn’s Youth Council, East Metro Integration District Youth Executive Board, HandsOn Twin Cities, and Higher Ground Academy's Student Council.
