Following the earthquake and tsunami that hit the shores of Japan on March 11, a number of NYLC’s partners have been doing tremendous work to support the disaster relief efforts. Read below for ways that you can get involved.

  • H2O for Life, a Minneapolis-based nonprofit that promotes clean water projects around the world, is issuing a “Call to Action” to help meet water and sanitation needs in Japan. You and your school can help H2O for Life and their implementing partner on the ground in Japan by organizing a “Walk for Water.” Tools for teachers and youth leaders are available on the H2O for Life website. Be sure to stop by the H2O for Life exhibit booth at the National Service-Learning Conference to collect free posters for your event.

  • The Shinnyo-en Foundation, a San Francisco-based philanthropic organization and World Sponsor of the National Service-Learning Conference, has dispatched several disaster relief volunteers to Japan to aid in the reconstruction efforts. In collaboration with local city administration and temples, these teams are helping distribute essential supplies including water, food, and toiletries. They also have donated more than $1 million to local organizations. You can follow their work in both English @Shinnyonews and Japanese @Shinnyoen_info.
