This summer NYLC, in partnership with the liberal arts college Viterbo University, is offering a series of online professional development classes. The courses are one credit each and are offered through the Generator School Network (gsn.nylc.org). Membership in this community of service-learning practitioners is free.

Completing all three one-credit courses qualifies a student/practitioner to apply for the NYLC Certificate of Excellent Practice in Service-Learning. The CEP, which involves an extended period of practice and study, recognizes teachers who effectively implement the K-12 Service-Learning Standards for Quality Practice.

The one-credit courses are:

June 21 – July 16
Implementing the Service-Learning Cycle: Participants will develop a service-learning project that they post in the GSN online community, using the tools of the Service-Learning Cycle. The instructor and other GSN members will provide feedback. Students will submit a final paper based on their experiences.

July 19 – Aug. 13
Conducting a Self-Assessment: Participants will complete a self-assessment on a service-learning project they’ve developed, according to the K-12 Service-Learning Standards for Quality Practice. This class will include using the resources of the GSN to evaluate the project.

Sept. 20 – Oct. 29
Service-Learning Curriculum Integration: Participants will engage in a practical application of the service-learning process through an examination of sample projects — paying particular attention to curriculum integration.
