NYLC announced today that Jim Pitofsky has joined the organization as its new Deputy Director. In this role, he is managing NYLCs strategic alliances, leading its public policy work, supporting its training and materials development, and will coordinate an international council of service-learning organizations. He comes to the organization following his tenure with the Social Enterprise Alliance.
"Jim will bring this organization to new levels," says NYLC President and CEO James Kielsmeier. "He has a rare combination of business acumen, social consciousness, and service-learning experience, as well as a track record implementing innovative approaches to nonprofit sustainability."
Pitofsky first discovered service-learning as a student at Stanford University, and later founded and directed IDEALS, an organization that worked internationally to create school-community and business-education partnerships. IDEALS was adopted by the National Association for Partners in Education, and was recognized by then-U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley as a national model for service-learning partnerships.
After getting a public interest law degree from Georgetown, he led national policy work advancing service-learning through the National and Community Service Coalition. As its president, he provided counsel to the Clinton Administration and to Congress in shaping supportive federal legislation.
Following his service-learning work, Pitofsky served as the vice president and later as acting president of the Echoing Green Foundation, where he initiated and managed strategic entrepreneurial alliances with businesses, philanthropists, foundations, and government agencies. He also founded SeaChange, and served as its CEO until its merger with the Social Enterprise Alliance.
