The National Urban Service-Learning Institute, NYLC’s annual event designed to explore issues of equity and achievement in urban education, announced today that it will be added to the Colloquium on P-12 STEM Education Research. The Colloquium, hosted by the STEM Education Center at the University of Minnesota, will be held on August 15-16, 2011, in St. Paul, Minn.

The Colloquium is a forum for professionals researching and teaching P-12 STEM education to come together to share problems and create solutions for STEM. Participants will hear different perspectives on how to integrate STEM, learn strategies to implement what works, and find out about emerging research. In addition, the Urban Service-Learning Institute, presented by NYLC within the event, will guide urban educators on standards-based service-learning for STEM education, integrating STEM with other academic areas, and thinking about service-learning as a pedagogy for increasing educational equity.

“The National Urban Service-Learning Institute this year was designed to highlight improving STEM instruction and engagement through service-learning,” said Kelita Bak, NYLC’s CEO. “We are thrilled to be able to offer participants in this event with a more robust array of professional development opportunities in STEM education, along with our traditional focus on urban equity issues.”

The shift in the timing for this year’s event comes in part because of the economic landscape for schools this summer. With the state government shutdown and uncertain school funding in Minnesota this year, “it makes sense for like-minded organizations to work in partnership,” said Bak.

Featured sessions focusing on urban service-learning at the event will include Rosilyn Carroll, Jean Strait, and Richard Webb of Hamline University’s Center for Excellence in Urban Education engaging in a dialogue on service-learning as a means of reducing education disparities. Susan Root, NYLC’s research director, will present on designing academically rigorous service-learning experiences integrating STEM, and middle school educators will talk about environmental education projects.

“We're excited to offer the opportunity for educators, researchers, and legislators to learn more in-depth about STEM education from the perspective of service-learning. Service learning is an important piece of the STEM education puzzle,” noted Adrienne Corpman, Administrative Manager for the STEM Education Center.

Attendees are also welcome to attend a welcome reception Sunday, August 14, 5:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. To register for the Eighth Annual National Urban Service-Learning Institute, please register for the Colloquium on P-12 STEM Education Research at http://www.cehd.umn.edu/STEM/colloquium2011/
