NYLC Awards Research Prizes
research award
As part of its Growing to Greatness: The State of Service-Learning Project, the National Youth Leadership Council announced two research prizes at the National Service-Learning Conference, on March 18, 2005, in Long Beach, Calif.
The awards, $1,000 each, will allow the student-faculty research teams to conduct further research, using the data from G2G's 2004 survey of kindergarten through 12th-grade principals. The research will culminate in articles for possible inclusion in the "Growing to Greatness 2006" report.
The awards were presented to Professor Ellen Bennett Steiner and student Carolyn Woempner of the University of Denver, and Professor Amanda Moore McBride and student Suzanne Pritzker of Washington University.
The University of Denver team will research school-level barriers to implementation of service-learning. The Washington University team will conduct a comparative study of service-learning across urban and suburban settings.
The survey of 1,799 principals boasts a 91-percent response rate and produced a wealth of raw data on service-learning and its perceived impact.
Growing to Greatness is sponsored by the State Farm Companies Foundation.
