NYLC and State Farm Companies Foundation to Honor Daisy Slan
2008 stellar award winner
The National Youth Leadership Council announces the winner of the 2008 Stellar Award.
Daisy Slan, a native and graduate of the East Baton Rouge Parish schools in Louisiana, has worked in education for more than 33 years. Until her retirement four years ago, she was the Superintendent of the East Feliciana Parish School District, where she also worked as a Supervisor of Curriculum. With a doctorate in education leadership, master’s in elementary education, and bachelor’s degree in child development, she has both taught and conducted research. In the 1980s, Slan worked for the Louisiana Department of Education on a reading program, then moved to Louisiana State University to develop a state-wide evaluation and assessment for teachers. Slan currently serves as a consultant at the Rural School and Community Trust, a national non-profit organization connecting rural schools with thriving communities.
Slan, a mother, grandparent and mentor embodies the true spirit of Stella Raudenbusch. This is evident in her love for all children; her young heart; being a pioneer of innovatively engaging young people; and bridging the gap between urban and rural communities.
The Stellar Award honors of late Stella Raudenbush. Raudenbush was a spirited pioneer in the service-learning field. Her 30-year career included work as a community activist, teacher, and spiritual seeker. She was passionate about children, social justice, community, diversity, urban education, and elders.
