NYLC and the Presidio Trust to Offer Youth Leadership Training

This summer, NYLC will offer the National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) on July 20–27, 2013 at the Presidio of San Francisco. The training will be offered in partnership with the National Center for Service and Innovative Leadership, a new initiative of the Presidio Trust. This will be one of the first programs offered through the National Center, and is the first time in NYLT’s 30-year history that the training will be held on the west coast.

“We are thrilled to be able to partner with the Presidio Trust to bring NYLC’s signature youth leadership program to the National Center this summer,” said Kelita Bak, NYLC CEO. “Holding NYLT at this unique national park site will reinforce both the life-changing experience that NYLT provides for youth and adult participants as well as help realize the goal of the National Center to help purpose-driven leaders achieve greater impact in their communities.”

NYLC’s youth leadership training gathers teams of young people and adult mentors from across the country for a week of cultural exchange, leadership, and teambuilding. Each year, as a result of NYLT, youth teams create action plans in response to the educational inequity and opportunity gaps witnessed in their home communities.

After participating for the first time in 2009, an alumnus of the training stated, "NYLT showed me a different perspective on life. It helped me understand how different people of various cultures are working together to solve the achievement gap."

The training will take place at the Presidio of San Francisco, a nearly 1,500-acre former army post that now serves as a national park, a National Historic Landmark District, and home to a thriving community of more than 8,000 people who live, work, or attend school at the site. Honoring the Presidio’s rich legacy of military service, the Presidio Trust is repurposing its historic Fort Scott campus into a National Center for Service and Innovative Leadership dedicated to developing leaders prepared to tackle our nation’s most pressing societal challenges. “The collaborative nature of the Presidio Trust and its new National Center is a natural fit for an entrepreneurial program like NYLT,” stated Greg Werkheiser, Director of the National Center.

“We want the programming to be informed by the local expertise and interests of the Bay Area while also maintaining the richness in programming that we've honed for over 30 years,” stated Amanda Larson, NYLC’s Professional Development Manager who oversees the program. “Bringing NYLT to the Presidio provides endless opportunities for youth participants to experience and learn about leadership in a variety of settings — wilderness and urban. It's exciting to have a solid framework to build from that creates a life-changing experience for students and spurs amazing community action led by youth.”
