Minneapolis Foundation Funds Local Schools Through NYLC
The National Youth Leadership Council has been granted $40,000 to work with eight urban schools in Minneapolis through a grant from the B.C. Gamble and P.W. Skogmo Fund of the Minneapolis Foundation. Forty educators from these schools, all part of NYLC’s national Generator School Network, will use service-learning to increase academic achievement, help students learn leadership and life skills, and enhance their civic engagement.
“Support from the Minneapolis Foundation creates an unprecedented opportunity for Minneapolis to become a real-world laboratory for transforming schools and communities through service-learning,” said NYLC Vice President of Programs Wokie Weah. “Studying what works in Minneapolis has the dual benefit of impacting Minneapolis students and informing NYLC’s work across the country.”
In addition to linking with educators across the country through the GSN, these schools will be linked to schools in other NYLC urban hub areas in New York, Chicago, and St. Paul.
GSN’s community of service-learning educators supports schools and teachers in improving their practice — both online and on-site. Members help one another assess and strengthen their practice, implement the service-learning cycle, exchange experiences — all with the goals of improving student and community outcomes. Participating schools have access to evidence-based assessment tools, professional development opportunities, curricular resources, and network advisors.
