Making the Case for Academic Service-Learning

NYLC, along with eight other service-learning organizations, recently submitted a letter to the Corporation for National and Community Service following the listening tour on the new Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act.

The organizations, representing service-learning practitioners at the national, state and local levels, called on the CNCS to:

  1. make a clear distinction between academic service-learning as an educational initiative and other forms of “service-learning” that are primarily community service programs;
  2. encourage the U.S. Department of Education to support the use of academic service-learning as an engaged teaching strategy that can enhance students’ educational success across all levels of education; and
  3. connect current academic service-learning initiatives across elementary, middle, secondary, and higher educational systems.
