2011 National Youth Leadership Training – Group Application Due May 6th
Join other young people from across the country for a week of adventure, self-discovery, leadership-building and service. The training, held July 16-23 at Voyageur Environmental Center in Mound, Minn., prepares students to implement service-learning projects that address the achievement gap in their home communities.
High school students entering grades 9-12 in the fall of 2011 attend as a team, and come from schools or community-based organizations, accompanied by a supportive year-round adult mentor or teacher.
Minneapolis Middle School Students Tackle Achievement Gap
More than 50 sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders at Field Community School in South Minneapolis are enrolled in a program that goes by the acronym “AVID” (Advancement Via Individual Determination), and aims to close the achievement gap by preparing students for college-readiness and success in a global society.

Yesterday, details were released on proposed federal legislation that would make $37.6 billion in cuts to discretionary spending over FY 2010 levels. Included in these cuts is a $72 million reduction to the budget of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).

Greg Mortenson Keynotes National Service-Learning Conference
International educator Greg Mortenson, best known for building more than 150 schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan, told the audience gathered in Atlanta, Ga. for the National Service-Learning Conference Thurs. that he felt he was among “kindred minds.”

NYLC Senior Vice President Weah to Lead New Nonprofit Supporting Youth
NYLC’s Senior Vice President Wokie Weah will be leaving the National Youth Leadership Council in March to serve as the first president of a new out-of-school-time nonprofit intermediary based in Minneapolis. With initial start-up funding from the McKnight Foundation and other local foundations, the organization will work in the Twin Cities metro area to increase the quantity and quality of activities for youth beyond the classroom.
