NYLC joins forces with the STEM Education Center to present the Eighth Annual National Urban Service-Learning Institute
The National Urban Service-Learning Institute, NYLC’s annual event designed to explore issues of equity and achievement in urban education, announced today that it will be added to the Colloquium on P-12 STEM Education Research. The Colloquium, hosted by the STEM Education Center at the University of Minnesota, will be held on August 15-16, 2011, in St. Paul, Minn.
Support the National Youth Leadership Training through the Pepsi Refresh Project
Inspired by their experience at the National Youth Leadership Training, which empowers youth to take the initiative on closing the achievement gap in their home schools, NYLC’s Youth Advisory Council members have applied for a $25,000 Pepsi Refresh Project grant.
Teens celebrate as Indiana’s texting ban goes into effect today
Drivers of any age are now prohibited from texting while driving in Indiana, thanks in part to lobbying and public awareness work by teen drivers. Contrary to the stereotype of the continuously texting teen, youth in the Project Ignition program are showing that students have a strong and effective voice in supporting safe driving legislation.
Planning Underway for the 2012 Conference: Our World, Our Future
On June 22, NYLC and youthrive will hold the annual conference community kick-off event to rally organizations to help to plan the 23rd Annual National Service-Learning Conference and youthrive PeaceJam Leadership Conference. The combined conference will be in Minneapolis, Minn., April 11-14, 2012, with the theme “Our World, Our Future.”
Project Ignition Announces Top Ten High School Service-Learning Campaigns Addressing Teen Driver Safety
After a rigorous evaluation of Project Ignition’s 26 Tier 1 grantees, State Farm® and the National Youth Leadership Council are proud to announce its top 10 teen driver safety campaigns. These schools have been selected to continue with Project Ignition as Tier 2 grantees and will have the opportunity to receive continued funding to further implement their service-learning programs.

In the noisy world of education reform and improving academic outcomes for students, service-learning has been quietly building recognition over the past year. Familiarity with the teaching strategy that links students’ academic goals to improving their communities has risen five percentage points from 2010. Now 14 percent of the U.S. public says they are extremely or very familiar with the academic strategy.
Youth Advisory Council Members Train on Achievement Gap at PeaceJam
Youth Advisory Council members Eva Gallegos Perez, Pajnucci Vue, David Wehrwein, Annie Wood, and Cheng Leng Xiong offered training on the achievement gap during the PeaceJam event at the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis, May 1. Their session illustrated Nobel laureate Oscar Arias Sanchez’s message that “Security lies in human development.”
Former NYLC Youth Advisory Council Member Kicks off National Tour
For Julia Sewell, a 23-year-old “graduate” of many NYLC experiences over the past nine years, hip hop and spoken word performances are two-way. She and fellow performer Don Patterson, 25, emphasize that they are learning as they engage their audiences in workshops and trainings on the achievement gap, leadership, diversity, privilege, dropping “in”, the arts, scholarship, and service-learning.

Reflection Journal Authors Bring King’s Teachings to Service-Learning
Those who attended the 2011 National Service-Learning Conference in Atlanta, Ga. in April returned home with a gift: the recently published Tough Minds and Tender Hearts: Building Martin Luther King’s “Beloved Community” Through Service-Learning. The reflection journal ties King’s teachings to service-learning through a series of reflection questions that follow each chapter.
