Eighth Annual National Urban Service-Learning Institute Explored Connections between Service-Learning and STEM

On August 15 and 16, more than 200 educators and researchers from across the United States came together in St. Paul, Minn., at the Eighth Annual National Urban Service-Learning Institute. This year, the gathering took place within the Colloquium on P-12 STEM Education Research at the University of Minnesota. Attendees explored how service-learning can help improve and integrate science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) instruction, particularly in urban settings.

Project Ignition Grants Available for Students to Address Teen Driver Safety and Save Lives on the Road

The National Youth Leadership Council® and State Farm® are pleased to announce the availability of $2,000 Project Ignition grants for public high schools to support their students in addressing teen driver safety through service-learning.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, traffic crashes remain the leading cause of death for teens in the United States. That's a staggering statistic that young people, in partnership with their teachers and communities, are working to change through Project Ignition.

Guilford County Schools Works with NYLC to Bring Service-Learning District-Wide

In Greensboro, N.C., a cadre of teachers spent weeks over the summer planning new service-learning experiences to engage in with their students during the upcoming school year. Through the leadership of Guilford County Schools Superintendent Maurice (Mo) Green; Executive Director, Student Services Brenda Elliot-Johnson; and numerous staff from across this school district, the school district has created a wellspring of support among teachers and students for academically rigorous service-learning.

NYLC to Host Five Promise Fellows for 2011-2012

NYLC will be hosting five AmeriCorps Promise Fellows for 2011-12, expanding our capacity for program planning and evaluation, particularly with issues around the achievement gap. NYLC has a long history of hosting 1-2 Promise Fellows during the year, and we are excited by the new training and evaluation work the additional staff will enable.

Rebuilding Continues After North Minneapolis Tornadoes

2011 has been a record setting year for tornados, most notably that which hit Joplin, Missouri; one of the top ten deadliest tornadoes in recordkeeping history. These events motivate many wanting to help those affected, and youth are especially eager to help and be involved.
