Project Ignition Changed My Life

Every day I get asked, “What is Project Ignition?”  To be honest, at first I really didn’t know. I got involved last January when my school, Springlake-Earth High School, received its first Project Ignition grant of $2,000. I participated, but didn’t really understand the significance of what I was doing. I “agreed” to pledges and I painted signs; I even went as far as to help make the required video at the end of the school year. I didn’t really see the total picture until we started to put on paper what we had done, including the changes we started to see in our peers’ driving behaviors.

NYLC Welcomes New Fellows

NYLC is pleased to announce the addition of three NYLC staff; professional development fellow Amelia Harman, research fellow Joe Schantz, and Youth Initiatives fellow Justin VerMeer. All three staff will serve one-year terms to support the expansion of the organization’s programs and initiatives and build organizational capacity.

The National Youth Leadership Council mourns the loss of an extraordinary man, Peter Benson, and extends our deepest sympathies to his family and the entire Search Institute family. Peter and the team at Search Institute were friends, allies, and national partners of NYLC for many years, and our hearts go out to all those who knew Peter.

Youth Offer Tips To Change Driving Behavior

For the past seven years, Project Ignition has empowered students, in partnership with teachers and communities, to become active problem-solvers in one of the most pressing issues we face: teen driver safety. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, traffic crashes remain the leading cause of death for teens in the United States.

CNCS Programs Again Targeted for Elimination

This past September 15, NYLC joined the Save Service campaign in calling for constituents to contact their elected officials about the value of the Corporation for National and Community Service and the impact of CNCS programs in local communities. Many took action, adding to over 18,000 calls made as part of the Save Service campaign this year, with over 180 visits to D.C. offices and 3,000 phone calls around the September “Make the Call Day.”

NYLC Announces 2011-12 Youth Advisory Council Members

Fourteen youth ages 14-18 from across the United States have been selected to serve on the National Youth Leadership Council’s Youth Advisory Council. This group of diverse young people will serve on and lead committees throughout the year, gaining valuable experience in public speaking, workshop facilitation, and project management, as well as take leadership on important issues such as the achievement gap.

Make the Call to Save Service on September 15

This week, Congress returns to Washington and will resume discussions about the 2012 budget. At the same time, they will also begin to identify $3 trillion worth of cuts to our nation's budget.

With so much at stake, each of us must make a strong and compelling case that national service is a smart investment that generates jobs and empowers communities to rebuild in these tough economic times — and funding for the Corporation for National and Community Service should not be cut.
