Before attending the National Youth Leadership Training, I believed that I had a decent understanding of the achievement gap and the effects it had. I believed that it could be easily defined and that it was easy to spot examples of the achievement gap because they would be obvious. I quickly realized at NYLT, though, that the achievement gap is much more complex.

NYLC Announces New Board Members

NYLC is delighted to welcome eight new members to the organization’s Board of Directors, who will begin their terms in January 2012. “We are thrilled that these individuals have dedicated themselves to developing young leaders, supporting educators, and advancing the service-learning field through their commitment to NYLC. National Service-Learning Conference Announces New Partners

New national and local partners have confirmed their support for the 23rd Annual National Service-Learning Conference® and youthrive PeaceJam Leadership Conference that will take place in Minneapolis, Minn. on April 11-14, 2012. Special Olympics Project UNIFY®, Youth Service America, Minnesota Alliance With Youth, and local community partners will each play significant roles at this year’s conference.

NYLC Hosts National Workshop Review

Fourteen national reviewers gathered at National Youth Leadership Council’s offices in St. Paul, Minn. to select the best workshop proposals for the 23rd Annual National Service-Learning Conference and youthrive PeaceJam Leadership Conference to be held April 11-14, 2012 in Minneapolis, Minn. These reviewers consisted of both youth and adults representing a variety of schools and organizations.

Our efforts at Eureka High School have been credited by Humboldt County Department of Public Health for reducing teen car crashes by 33 percent in the past five years.

Principal, School, and Neighborhood Go Green in New Orleans

Early last spring, community members, teachers, and students stood amidst pallets of concrete blocks that would become raised beds in New Orleans’ first schoolyard and community garden. This green space will not only be a place for lessons to take place during the school day, but also will offer a safe place for community members to gather and garden in an area of New Orleans known for high crime rates.

Fieldcrest High School joined Project Ignition in January of this year when we received an initial $2,000 grant. In that short time, I believe that we have had a monumental impact on the small farming communities that comprise our school district in central Illinois.

Youth Advisory Council Leads Trainings at PeaceJam Slam

The event took place in Saint Paul, Minn. and is hosted annually by youthrive, the Upper Midwest Affiliate for PeaceJam International.
