Breaking Down Barriers

July 23, 2004

NYLC's offices received a facelift thanks to participants in the weeklong National Youth Leadership Training. The group of 10 young people, ages 15 to 24, visited NYLC's headquarters on July 15, 2004, and created "Breaking Down Barriers," a permanent mural on one of the office walls. The service project was one of eight Pursuit of Excellence projects - experiential, hands on, intensive applications of concepts learned at NYLT, implemented by youth leaders.

On July 18, the 2004 National Youth Leadership Training drew to a close. High school students from across the country — wearing baby blue NYLT
t-shirts, and carrying suitcases and sleeping bags — said tearful
goodbyes to their new friends and headed home to new possibilities.

Higher-Education Community Service on the Rise

On May 3, 2004, Campus Compact released the results of its annual survey of colleges and universities. Member institutions not only reported record participation in community service but also an increase in structural and financial support for initiatives to improve communities and to make civic learning part of academic life.

Texas High School Students Put New Twist on Senior Prom

June 9, 2004

On May 1, 2004, students from Lufkin (Texas) High School transformed an elementary school cafeteria into a Savoy-style jazz club for their first Senior Citizens' Prom. Seniors, children, and adult and youth volunteers danced the evening away to the big band music of the Tom Houston Orchestra, indulged in food and drink, and posed for photographs.

Peer Mentor Jan Schuster Receives Carnahan Award

NYLC congratulates National Service-Learning Exchange Peer Mentor Jan Schuster who received the Governor Carnahan Service and Volunteer Award from the Missouri Community Service Commission on June 4, 2004. Each year, the award recognizes one outstanding volunteer from Missouri who demonstrates dedication, outstanding service, and volunteerism in pursuit of improving communities and changing lives.

Remembering Frank Newman (1927-2004)

The world of education lost a tremendous friend and advocate on Saturday, May 29, when Frank Newman died of melanoma in Providence, R.I. He was 77. A pioneer of service-learning and educational reform, Newman was a co-founder of Campus Compact in the early 1980s, bringing service-learning to the world of higher education. He was also a member of the National Commission on Service-Learning, chaired by Senator John Glenn.

NYLC's Bernard Gill Honored by Saint Paul Public Schools

The Saint Paul Public School's Community Education Citywide Advisory
Council has named NYLC Program Manager Bernard Gill its Community
Programs Partner of the Year. The award will be presented at a June 17,
2004, ceremony, honoring community members and staff who have
contributed to the growth of Community Education programs.

Philadelphia Students Get to the Root of Homelessness

When Philadelphia eighth graders studying homelessness volunteered at a food bank, it wasn't the end of their service-learning project. It was just the beginning of a process that would enrich the entire 2003-04 school year.
