Project Ignition Promotes Driver Safety in Carson City, Nevada

Carson High School Students participating in State Farm® and NYLC's Project Ignition promoted safe driving through service-learning. Their school assemblies, called Every Second Counts, demonstrated that students make better driving choices when they slow down and pay attention. The Nevada Appeal was there to cover the story.

A Busy Fall for Growing to Greatness

Growing to Greatness: The State of Service-Learning Project is
drawing quite a bit of attention this fall, with presentations,
requests for new papers, and the ongoing process of conducting research
and publishing the results. The first comprehensive national study of
the state of service-learning in kindergarten through 12th grade, G2G
measures indicators of how youths are valuable to society, rather than
the more common approach of measuring their shortcomings.

NYLC Participates in Seventh IANYS Conference in Ghana

From August 23 through 27, NYLC Director of Model Programs and Strategic Initiatives Wokie Weah and Youth Initiatives Coordinator Ashley Shaver attended the Seventh International Association for National Youth Services Conference in Accra, Ghana — gaining international perspectives and building alliances. Established in 1996, IANYS stimulates and facilitates an exchange of national-youth-service information between diverse countries.

National Service-Learning Conference Empowers Florida Teens to Save Lives in Hurricane’s Wake

2004 NSLC attendees participated in service-learning projects organized by the ManaTEEN Club, a youth-led volunteer initiative of Volunteer Services of Manatee (Fla.) County. Participants created hurricane emergency kits, packaging hundreds of meals and flashlights to distribute to Florida residents in case of an emergency. Only months after the conference, Charley arrived.

25 High Schools Selected for Project Ignition 2004-05

NYLC and State Farm® have announced the 25 high schools selected to participate in Project Ignition. Each school will receive $2,000 from State Farm to launch a service-learning project. Their charge: Create a media campaign addressing teen-driver safety.

Peer Mentor Rahima Wade Named John Glenn Scholar in Service-Learning

NYLC congratulates National Service-Learning Exchange Peer Mentor Rahima Wade on being named a John Glenn Scholar in Service-Learning in the area of teacher education. The John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public Policy at The Ohio State University announced her award on July 27.
