2,900 People Attend The 16th Annual National Service-Learning Conference

On the afternoon of March 17, 2005, the Exhibit Hall at the Long Beach (Calif.) Convention Center was swarmed with service-learning enthusiasts from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and 49 other countries. Fifty-three exhibitors discussed their organizations and services, California fare — from seafood to Asian cuisine — was served, and visitors viewed presentations of 50 regional service projects, 10 HIV/AIDS prevention projects, and 10 Project Ignition driver-safety campaigns. Later, guests were entertained by the Brazilian youth theater troupe Transformarte and got down to the hip-hop sounds of California's Justice Leeg.

Freedom Writers Highlight the Power of Young People

For all the talk about the power of young people to change their lives, there's nothing like a real-life example, and that's just what attendees got when keynote speaker Erin Gruwell addressed The 16th Annual National Service-Learning Conference, on March 18, 2005, in Long Beach, Calif. In 1994, Gruwell, a 23-year-old English teacher, started at Long Beach's Woodrow Wilson High School, where she was given the kids other teachers had given up on.

in Long Beach, Calif. The awards recognized individuals and
organizations that have contributed significantly to the
service-learning movement.

Nadinne Cruz to Receive 2005 Alec Dickson Servant Leader Award

The National Youth Leadership Council is proud to name internationally respected speaker, author, and education consultant Nadinne Cruz as the 2005 Alec Dickson Servant Leader Award recipient. For more than two decades, Cruz has advanced service-learning nationally and internationally, dating back to her pioneering leadership with the Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs in St. Paul, during the 1980s and early 1990s.

Service-Learning and Tsunami Relief: A Long-Term Response

As weeks pass, reports of the tsunami recovery are rapidly vanishing from the mainstream media. The reconstruction efforts, however, will continue for years to come. In many schools, young people have contributed to these efforts, and it is NYLC's hope that this will be a long-term response, not one that fades as other stories take over the newscasts. We encourage teachers to look for true service-learning responses to these events, through which students can learn and deepen their involvement.

Project Ignition Recognizes Schools and Expands Program

Car crashes are the number-one killer of teens in the U.S., but across the country, high school students are creating media campaigns to change attitudes and save lives. These young people are part of Project Ignition, State Farm® and NYLC’s service-learning initiative to support high school students as they promote safe driving among their peers. On Friday, March 18, in Long Beach, Calif., one of these campaigns will be named “Best in Show,” earning a substantial grant for its school.

Here Comes Growing to Greatness 2005

Growing to Greatness: The State of Service Learning Project culminates its first two years with the publication of "Growing to Greatness 2005." The report features a host of articles by service-learning experts, along with profiles of community-based organizations and service-learning activity in 21 states. The report will be released on Friday, March 18, at the National Service Learning Conference in Long Beach, Calif.

NYLC Brings Service-Learning to Switzerland

When Patty Blohlinger and Doug Beard, teachers from Zurich's Inter-Community School, attended the NYLC's 2004 National Service-Learning Conference in Orlando, Fla., they discovered service-learning and wanted to share it with their entire school. On October 19, 2004, NYLC Trainer Verna Simmons and Youth Initiatives Coordinator Ashley Shaver did a training for the school's elementary teachers.
