July 24, 2005: The last day of the National Youth Leadership Training
arrived, and with it signing camp T-shirts, exchanging of email
addresses, and the tears of solemn farewells. In just one week, the
diverse NYLT community had transformed into one big family.

NYLC Supports International Service-Learning

During the past few years, service-learning has been expanding rapidly
around the world, and NYLC has been committed to supporting
service-learning's global adoption, offering technical support and
trainings in such far-flung places as Ghana, Switzerland, Argentina,
and most recently, Singapore and South Africa.

25 High Schools Selected for Project Ignition 2005-06

Once again, State Farm and NYLC’s Project Ignition asked schools
and organizations across the country to take a closer look at teen
driver safety. Teams of students submitted project proposals, and after
careful judging and some lively debates, 25 semifinalists were selected to receive $2,000 grants to implement their projects.

Remembering Stella Raudenbush

With great sadness, we need to inform you that Stella Raudenbush, one of NYLC's Senior Fellows, died this weekend at the age of 59. She collapsed suddenly while teaching a dance class on Saturday, May 21.

I slammed down the phone and rushed to the bathroom to get ready for another jam-packed day at The National Service- Learning Conference. Held this year under the California sun, the gathering of 2,900 people brought nearly 1,000 youths to the Long Beach Convention Center for the 16th year of this event.

Project Ignition Winner Announced at Awards Ceremony

On March 18, 2005, NYLC and State Farm® held the Licensed to Live Award Festival at The 16th Annual National Service-Learning Conference in Long Beach, Calif. Students from 10 high schools who were finalists in the first year of Project Ignition, a service-learning program promoting teen-driver safety, were recognized. All of the finalists had created media campaigns to educate their peers, with Mooresville (Ind.) High School's In a Flash taking top honors and the accompanying $10,000 grant.

California First Lady Maria Shriver Visits The National Service-Learning Conference

On Friday, March 18, 2005, California First Lady Maria Shriver and her daughter joined participants of The 17th Annual National Service-Learning Conference in Long Beach, Calif., to create school-supply baskets for a local Head Start program.

NYLC Convenes Third Annual HIV/AIDS Best Practices Forum

On March 17, 50 participants gathered for the Third Annual HIV/AIDS Best Practices Forum: Youths as Change Agents, convened by NYLC as part of The 16th Annual National Service-Learning Conference. The daylong experiential forum included networking, exchanges of ideas and best practices, and an examination of ways young people are currently effecting change around the globe.
