NYLC is pleased to announce the addition of new staff members Merina Neal, Finance and Human Resources Coordinator, and Dorly Oriol, a Legislative Fellow from the YMCA d’Haiti who will work at NYLC through the end of April.
Service-Learning Field Loses Leader and Friend
Greenfield, Massachusetts — Rahima Carol Wade, 58, died peacefully, embraced by her family at home in Greenfield, Mass. on March 27, 2012 from metastatic breast cancer.
Educator, author, consultant, and pioneer in the area of service-learning, Wade was also a soulmate to many of the people who loved her long and well. She knew the healing power of meditation, music, and dance and engaged in these practices with others regularly for over 30 years. She modeled what it means to live with deep joy and loving compassion, paying attention to the present moment wherever she was.

NYLC Prepares for Nation’s Largest Conference on Service-Learning
For the past several months, staff members at NYLC have been diligently working on the National Service-Learning Conference® and youthrive PeaceJam Leadership Conference by planning preconference and Thought Leader sessions, preparing the NYLC Youth Advisory Council to lead and network, and thinking creatively about how to interact with audiences outside of the conference walls in real time using social media.
NYLT Alumnus Connects Disabilities to the Achievement Gap
In New Jersey, one young National Youth Leadership Training alumnus has transformed his passion for making a difference into a lasting cultural shift in the schools of his home community. Zach Certner, a current NYLC Youth Advisory Council member, already had experience building a nonprofit organization, but the NYLT experience gave him a new perspective and deeper understanding of his work with special needs athletes.

On- and Off-Site Service-Learning Projects Announced for Our World, Our Future
Each year at the National Service-Learning Conference®, attendees participate in dozens of on-and off-site service-learning projects. Since September, local planning committee members have been setting the groundwork for these projects to take place during the 2012 conference, Our World, Our Future.
Donna Cook, Founder of youthrive, to Receive National Honor
Donna Cook, Executive Director and founder of Twin Cities-based youthrive, the upper Midwest affiliate for PeaceJam International, will receive a national award for her work engaging young leaders in peace programming. Cook will receive the 2012 Stellar Service-Learning Award from the National Youth Leadership Council, a Saint Paul, Minn.-based nonprofit that convenes the National Service-Learning Conference annually.
GSN Updates Enliven the Networking Website
2009 marked the official launch of NYLC’s Generator School Network — an online platform for service-learning practitioners to learn, plan, and connect with each other across the globe and a place where they can share resources and improve their practice. To meet the needs of a growing membership (more than 1,400 members), the GSN has implemented new features to allow members to access professional development topics and navigate the site more easily.
Let’s Talk About Good Teaching
I never thought about the various aspects of being a teacher until I had the opportunity to interview one of my favorite teachers — Scot Hovan. Mr. Hovan is currently a physics teacher at Mahtomedi High School in Minnesota and has been teaching for seventeen years.
