NYLC and Minnesota Campus Compact Partner in Field Hearing on Service-Learning
Minnesota Rep. Betty McCollum joined a diverse gathering of nearly 100 service-learning practitioners for a morning of tree-planting and service-learning testimonies Thursday, April 16 at the NYLC offices in St. Paul, Minn.
World Forum Experiences at the 20th Annual National Service-Learning Conference
Participants at the 20th Annual National Service-Learning Conference in Nashville experienced abundant examples of how service-learning can change lives. Many of these experiences were highlighted during 40 workshops and other sessions at the World Forum day at the conference. Topics ranged from the global water crisis, to peace-building, to the Millennium Development Goals.
New Board Members Join NYLC
NYLC is delighted to announce that National Middle School Association Executive Director Betty Edwards and former Otto Bremer Foundation Executive Director John Kostishack have joined the governing board. As NYLC’s CEO Jim Kielsmeier said: “We look forward to working closely with them. They each bring such unique experiences to our work.”
Kennedy Serve America Act
NYLC is pleased to join many supporters nationwide in celebrating the bipartisan votes by the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives, which send the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act to President Obama for his signature. The bill, renamed in honor of Massachusetts' Senator Edward Kennedy, authorizes a massive expansion of national service programs for Americans of all ages.

A Turning Point for Service-Learning

Conference Fuels Next Steps in Service-Learning
For a moment in March it seemed that even country western stars had joined the festivities at the 20th Annual National Service-Learning Conference held in Nashville March 18-21. The 2,200 youth and adult participants included service-learning practitioners from all 50 states and 36 countries, alongside Elvis and Minnie Pearl.
YAC Receives Funding from State Farm® Youth Advisory Board
NYLC’s Youth Advisory Council recently received a second year of funding from a group of their peers, the State Farm® Youth Advisory Board, for their work across the nation addressing the achievement gap.
NYLC Celebrates Educator Mary Nobles Service
Minneapolis educator Mary Syfax Noble, having served for nine years on NYLC’s Board of Directors, completed her term in December. The NYLC community celebrated her service at their 25th Anniversary celebration held at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn., in early December, where she received a “Founders Award.”
