NYLC Receives Federal Funding for Middle School Initiative
The National Youth Leadership Council is a recipient of Learn and Serve America funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service, one of seven sites nationally to receive federal funding to support middle school students’ science, technology, engineering, and math education.
Senate Approves Federal Funding for Service and Service-Learning
Thanks to overwhelming support from the field, the U.S. Senate recently voted to increase funding for the Corporation for National and Community Service. On July 30, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved the Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations bill for fiscal year 2010 that, if agreed to, provides CNCS with $1.157 billion, $98 million more than that authorized by the U.S. House of Representatives.
NYLC Welcomes Youth Fellows
NYLC is excited to welcome a cohort of Fellows this summer. These young people are working on various aspects of NYLC including the National Youth Leadership Training, the G. Bernard Gill Legacy Project, the National Urban Service-Learning Institute, and the Barack and Michelle Obama Service-Learning Elementary summer leadership program in St. Paul, Minn.
NYLC Partners with Obama Service-Learning Elementary
After more than a year of researching, planning, and piloting service-learning school-wide, the Saint Paul School Board made it official on May 19, 2009 — Webster Magnet Elementary changed its name to Barack and Michelle Obama Service-Learning Elementary. To help strengthen and expand the school’s new vision, Obama Service-Learning Elementary and NYLC have established a strong and wide-ranging partnership.
Making the Case for Academic Service-Learning
NYLC, along with eight other service-learning organizations, recently submitted a letter to the Corporation for National and Community Service following the listening tour on the new Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act.

The House and Senate are taking action on the appropriations for the funding of the Corporation for National and Community Service, including Learn and Serve America. Starting this week and continuing for at least the next month, Congress will be debating funding levels. Your voice needs to be heard.
Service-Learning Arrives in Doha, Qatar
As a movement, service-learning now includes the Middle Eastern country of Qatar, situated on the Persian Gulf off the eastern coast of Saudi Arabia. In May, NYLC staff members Jim Kielsmeier, Sarah Ullmer, and Mason Fong
offered youth and adult trainings during Qatar’s first youth engagement
conference.

Advancing Service-Learning Research Through Partnerships
This spring, NYLC and the International Center for Research on Community Engagement at the University of Minnesota formed a new partnership to develop research initiatives that explore key issues pertaining to youth development and community engagement.
W.K. Kellogg Foundation Supports G. Bernard Gill Legacy Project
NYLC recently received funding from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to honor the legacy and continue the work of the late G. Bernard Gill, a former NYLC staff member.
