Minnesota Department of Education Honors NYLC Communications Director, Maddy Wegner

On Wednesday, May 19 at the Minnesota State Capitol, the Minnesota Department of Education recognized four leaders in education with 2010 Outstanding Contributions to Service-Learning Awards. Maddy Wegner, National Youth Leadership Council Communications Director, received the Passion Award and was honored for her longtime commitment to the teaching and learning methodology of service-learning.

Service-Learning World Forum Highlights Stories from across the Globe

The Fourth Annual Service-Learning World Forum brought together leaders in the field for a morning of cross-cultural sharing, comparing and learning. Held at the 21st Annual National Service-Learning Conference in San Jose, Calif., on March 27, speakers and attendees alike were struck by vast differences in specific approaches, while simultaneously inspired and comforted by great similarities in hopes and dreams.

Elders Reflect on Issues of Racism and Violence

“How can we heal communities torn apart by racism and violence?” asked author and activist Naomi Tutu, this year’s moderator for the annual Gathering of Elders, which closed out the 21st Annual National Service-Learning Conference on March 27 in San Jose, Calif. In response, elders Carol Bellamy, Milton Cambre, Reuven Gal, Mary Syfax Noble, and Leland Little Dog reflected with youth in a cross-generational exchange on community healing.

As a causal and informal space within an education conference, the Youth Room represented a collaborative effort of youth from across the county with the support of NYLC staff.
