NYLC Welcomes Henry Lozano on its Board of Directors

In August 2010, NYLC welcomed Henry Lozano as a new member on its Board of Directors.

Henry is the Executive Director for the Shinnyo-en Foundation. The mission of the Foundation is to bring forth deeper compassion among humankind, to promote greater harmony and to nurture future generations toward building caring communities. He is dedicated to advancing the Foundation’s Six Billion Paths to Peace Initiative working closely with schools and youth community service and volunteer campaigns extending around the world through its international partnerships.

National Urban Service-Learning Institute Brings Academic Rigor to Service-Learning

On August 11-13, 2010, a group of nearly 70 gathered in St. Paul, Minn., for the Seventh Annual National Urban Service-Learning Institute. Held at Crosswinds East Metro Arts and Science School, the event brought together urban educators, young people, and community members invested in using service-learning as a strategy to advance achievement and equity in urban education.

Bus Ride Home: A Perspective on NYLT

The National Youth Leadership Training is like no other camp experience. NYLT is a seven-day program of intense trainings about the achievement gap and service-learning, many new friends, and little to no sleep. Sounds pretty bizarre right? Well, anyone who attends NYLT wants to tell the world what they’ve just experienced — and how they want to make a difference in their communities.

Project Ignition Applications Available

Applications for $2,000 grants are now available online for high school students and adults interested in addressing teen driver safety through service-learning initiatives. State Farm® and the National Youth Leadership Council® are proud to continue their collaboration on Project Ignition in this seventh year.

Reducing teen crashes and strengthening youth leadership through service-learning remain the emphases of the program, though new enhancements include the opportunity to participate at two levels:
