Celebrating Jim Kielsmeier’s Service
More than 200 dauntless souls ― educators, youth, friends, politicians, board members, colleagues ― navigated their way to the Minnesota History Center in downtown St. Paul. Amidst the glittering lights of the season, celebrants gathered to honor the man who founded in NYLC in 1983, and now is transitioning to broader work supporting service-learning in the policy arena and globally.
National Youth Leadership Council Announces New CEO
The National Youth Leadership Council Board of Directors is excited to announce Kelita Svoboda Bak as its next Chief Executive Officer.
A strong advocate for youth, Bak has worked in youth development and public policy in Washington, D.C. for more than 15 years. She has held several leadership positions in national nonprofit organizations, most recently as the National Vice President of Advancement for Camp Fire USA.
Further Ripples from the National Youth Leadership Training
This fall, I was reminded of the power of a simple smile, and the power that a single young person can have on their world. Evan Dalgaard, a former member of NYLC’s Youth Advisory Council and graduate of the National Youth Leadership Training, had both. Tragically, Evan died in a car accident in 2008. But his influence continues at NYLC, on both its staff and on the current Youth Advisory Council members.
Youth Advise on Education Policy Initiative
NYLC’s Youth Advisory Council is expanding its reach, offering trainings on how young people can address the achievement gap — the disparity between the performance of groups of students, especially groups as defined by gender, race, ethnicity, ability, and socioeconomic status — on a range of educational measures.
Youth Advise on Education Policy Initiative
More than 50 representatives of organizations that support service-learning gathered at Georgetown University Thurs. to launch an effort to transform public education by advocating for engaged education approaches in federal and state policy. But it was three high school students from Maryland who set the direction for the initiative.
Profiles in Service-Learning: Lana Peterson
Lana Peterson, an NYLC Americorps Promise Fellow who is working with NYLC’s Generator School Network this year, has a passion for service-learning that runs deep and gets refueled daily as she helps other AmeriCorps members and teachers get steeped in high-quality service-learning.
Support Engaged Education Now
On November 11, a coalition of education and service-learning organizations launches Engaged Education Now, a campaign to improve academic achievement and school success by ensuring that all students have the opportunity to participate in service-learning.
NYLC Welcomes Tim Showalter-Loch to its Board of Directors
In September 2010, NYLC welcomed Tim Showalter-Loch as a new member to its Board of Directors.
