Have you ever wondered what it's like to be a police officer? Students from Albion (N.Y.) High School are finding out firsthand through the Albion Police Explorer service-learning program.

Between March 15 and 17, 2003, youth "Explorers" kept the peace at the New York State Learn and Serve America Conference in Kerhonkson, N.Y. The young people monitored hallways and directed participants to their sessions. On the second evening, as 300 youths danced the night away in the hotel ballroom, the Explorers managed the crowd, keeping everyone safe. These are the kinds of things the Explorers do best.

The Albion Police Explorer program began in November 2002 as a partnership between the school and the Albion Police Department. Young people receive training from the department on issues of ethics, confidentiality, sexual harassment, and conflict management. They apply their learning at school and in the community.

Classes, including The Law and You and Participation In Government, help young people gain a better understanding of what police do, and to reflect on their service activities. Students also receive training in leadership and explore various career opportunities in law enforcement. In addition to serving at school events, Explorers partner with the police to patrol community events, such as the local Strawberry Festival.

There's more to this project than the official black uniform, gold badge, and walkie-talkie. "We are put in a role of leadership in the community and the school district," says Perrin London, this year's Chief Explorer. "We feel more responsible to step up before a conflict escalates."
