NYLC and State Farm® have announced the 25 high schools selected to participate in Project Ignition. Each school will receive $2,000 from State Farm to launch a service-learning project. Their charge: Create a media campaign addressing teen-driver safety.

Car crashes are the leading cause of death among 15- to 20-year-olds, and these students are out to change that. Each group will launch a campaign using the mediums of their choice to convey their message. Selected projects include "Between the Tracks," a project about the danger of trying to outrun a train; "If You Drink, THINK! Don't Go for a Spin," which demonstrates alcohol-related loss of coordination by showing the effects of vodka on a web-spinning spider; and "You'll Have a Killer Time," which addresses driver safety hazards, including drinking and driving, changing a tire, and properly installing child-safety seats.

"This is an outstanding opportunity for schools, students, and the long-term safety of all teen drivers," said Jim Kielsmeier, NYLC President and CEO.

The students will complete their projects by December 2004. A panel of education, entertainment, and communication experts will judge the projects, and ten finalists will present or perform their projects at the 2005 National Service-Learning Conference in Long Beach, Calif., March 17-19, 2005. At the conference, one project will be named "Best of Festival," earning its school or organization a $10,000 grant.

"This is a golden opportunity for students to learn things that have real-world importance and will have a positive, direct impact on their communities," said Kathy Havens Payne of State Farm.

The 25 projects, selected from a national call for proposals, are …
