Service-Learning Curriculum Design

NYLC, in partnership with the liberal arts college Viterbo University, is offering two online graduate classes for educators during the 2010-11 school year. The courses are offered through the online community of the Generator School Network. Membership in this community of service-learning practitioners is free.

This three-credit course introduces participants to the foundations of service-learning and then guides them in writing high-quality service-learning curriculum that engages young people in solving a pressing community problem. Using the backward design curriculum planning method from Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe’s Understanding by Design (ASCD, 2005), students develop a service-learning project based on their existing classroom objectives or state content standards. By the end of the course, students will have written a complete unit for a service-learning project.

This is the first in a series of two online courses that qualify educators and other service-learning professionals to apply for the Certificate of Excellent Practice in K-12 Service-Learning. Both courses may be taken individually or in a series. To apply for a Certificate of Excellent Practice, an individual must meet CEP eligibility requirements, complete both courses, and submit a portfolio of their work to a panel of national service-learning experts for review and evaluation.
