NYLC Staff Presenting at STEM Conference

Monday, April 16, 2012 (All day) - Wednesday, April 18, 2012 (All day)

Elizabeth Koenig, Professional Development Manager, STEM lead at NYLC, will be presenting the following workshop at the Scaling STEM: Transforming Education Matters conference in North Carolina.

Engaging Students in STEM through Service-Learning

Service-learning is a teaching method that allows students to connect what they are learning in the classroom to addressing real problems in the community. Service-learning is especial useful in designing STEM learning experience because students are able to see the abstract concepts taught in the classroom solving problems in the community. This interactive session will provide strategies and resources for using service-learning in your classroom as well as examples of service-learning happening in middle school classrooms around the country.

The National Youth Leadership Council (NYLC) has worked with a group of 26 middle schools around the country who have been implementing STEM service-learning projects that focused on environmental sustainability issues in their community. These schools provide NYLC with a wealth of examples and strategies to share with other educators.
