Certificate of Excellent Practice in K-12 Service-Learning

Advanced Practitioners: Earn a Certificate of Excellent Practice in K-12 Service-Learning from NYLC and two graduate credits from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

NYLC has developed the Certificate of Excellent Practice to promote a consistent level of practice and produce the best results for young people. Using criteria developed by a national panel of service-learning experts, the NYLC evaluation board offers certification of practitioners whose work meets the established criteria for high-quality service-learning. The initiative has also begun the process of establishing nationally recognized standards for service-learning practitioners.

The process is broken up into three units:

  • Unit 1 builds a foundation, rationale, and common language in service-learning and includes training in the eight Principles of Effective Practice.
  • Unit 2 prepares participants for the evaluation process through online discussions of the eight Principles of Effective Practice and how they apply to case studies and participants’ past work.
  • Unit 3 is an evaluation process, where candidates compile portfolios for review by the NYLC evaluation board.

Who should participate?

Advanced service-learning practitioners.

What do participants receive?

  • two graduate credits from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls (requires successfully passing all class work)
  • advanced training in service-learning best practices
  • a Certificate of Excellent Practice in K-12 Service-Learning, providing national recognition of expert service-learning practice (requires successfully passing the NYLC evaluation board review)
