2012 NATIONAL YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING
The National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) will be held July 14-21, 2012 at the Audubon Center of the North Woods in Sandstone, MN with a focus on leadership, service-learning and the achievement gap. Since 1979 young people have gathered for a week of adventure, self-discovery, friendship, cultural exchange, leadership-building, and service. The NYLT model and philosophy has been replicated and adapted both locally and internationally.
Job Description: Primary Group Leader

The staff at NYLT are essential to creating this powerful, lasting, and life-changing experience for young people. Primary Group Leaders are senior staff at NYLT, filled by experienced youth workers. Primary Group Leaders are responsible for leading a diverse group of 8-10 high school students from across the nation throughout the 8 days of NYLT with the assistance of an Assistant Group Leader(s). This includes intensive, experiential wilderness activities, intellectually stimulating seminars, cultural exchanges, off-site service-learning projects and reflection. Primary Group Leaders facilitate discussions, reflection, and teambuilding activities and serve as role models for youth participants. Primary Group Leaders are responsible for overseeing their assigned Assistant Group Leader(s) and cultivating a positive working relationship with them. Primary Group Leaders live and work on-site at the Audubon Center of the North Woods and sleep in dormitory-style lodges with youth participants during the training.

All staff will participate in a thorough NYLT training and orientation covering service-learning, the achievement gap, team building and a full NYLT program overview.
A Successful Primary Group Leader …
- Has experience working with diverse groups of young people
- Has a basic knowledge of service-learning
- Is interested in engaging youth around the issue of the achievement gap
- Is committed to diversity and social justice
- Is comfortable dealing with high-stress situations
- Is enthusiastic, open-minded, non-judgmental, flexible, friendly, and creative
- Is open to living and working in a rustic camp environment for a week
- Has basic training in first aid and CPR
