2012 NATIONAL YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING 

The National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) will be held July 14-21, 2012 at the Audubon Center of the North Woods in Sandstone, MN with a focus on service-learning and the achievement gap.  Since 1983 young people have gathered for a week of adventure, self-discovery, friendship, cultural exchange, leadership-building, and service.  The NYLT model and philosophy has been replicated and adapted both locally and internationally.

Assistant Group Leader

In coordination with the Primary Group Leaders, Assistant Group Leaders (AGLs) are responsible for assisting in leading a group of 8-10 high school students throughout the 8 days of NYLT. This includes both on- and off-site activities. AGLs will work with a Primary Group Leader to facilitate discussions, reflection, and teambuilding activities. They also serve as role models for participants. AGLs are also responsible for cultivating a positive working relationship with all other staff members.  AGLs are often college freshman, seniors or juniors in high school and have been an NYLT participant.

Resource Staff

Resource Staff are responsible for supporting all activities of NYLT including team building, Immersion, Morals and Ethics and off-site service-projects.  This position involves behind the scenes support work as well as working directly with youth participants.

All staff members live and work onsite at the Audubon Center and sleep in dormitory style lodges with youth participants during the training.  

Staff Training  July 11th – 14th at Audubon Center of the North Woods in Sandstone, MN

All staff will participate in a thorough NYLT training and orientation covering service-learning, the achievement gap, team building and full NYLT program overview. 

A Successful NYLT Staff Member….

  • Has experience working with diverse groups of young people
  • Has a basic knowledge of service-learning
  • Interested in engaging youth around the issue of the achievement gap
  • Committed to diversity and social justice
  • Comfortable dealing with high-stress situations
  • Enthusiastic, open-minded, non-judgmental, flexible, friendly, and creative
  • Open to living and working in a rustic camp environment for a week
  • Has basic training in first aid and CPR (not required)
